John W. Witters

John Wesley Witters, 86, of Paris, Illinois, passed away at 5:36 p.m. Monday, November 28, 2016, at Paris Community Hospital. He was retired from District Five of the Illinois Department of Transportation after a civil engineering career of almost forty years.

He was born December 14, 1929, in Coles County, Illinois, the son of Anson and Edith (Charlesworth) Witters. He married Freida Wood on July 17, 1953, in Marshall, Illinois, and she survives.

Other survivors include a son, John Mark (Beth) Witters of Tucker, Georgia; a daughter, Betsy Lynn (Louie) Curl of Centralia, Illinois; two brothers, Robert (Carolyn) Witters of Lighthouse Point, Florida, and Charles Witters of Las Vegas, Nevada; three sisters, Norma (Loren) Klaus of Glen Carbon, Illinois, Jeanne Thomas of Charleston, Illinois, and Joyce (Tim) Bennett of Chesterfield, Missouri; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Larry K. Witters, and a brother, Gary Witters.

Mr. Witters earned his Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1953. John's life was marked by selfless dedication and service to his church and community. He loved volunteering and served on many committees at First United Methodist Church. He was a former member of the Paris School District #95 Board of Education and had been active in Little League Basketball. He was a charter member of the former Kiwanis Early Risers Club of Paris and was a life member of Paris Community Hospital Foundation. He was a former Director of the Paris Community Nurse Association, and enjoyed chairing and organizing the annual Christmas Baskets program for many years. John was awarded the Parisian of the Year award by the Paris Area Chamber of Commerce for his lifetime of volunteer work and service. John and Freida enjoyed many years of camping and traveling together, and he especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
