Hear My Flame
(c) 2006 Kiki Williamson/Mark Witters
Hear my flame one hundred years,
The smoke through generations rising.
How many died unjustified to make your grand uprising?
Hunting us through burning times
For the challenge that we were.
No authority could ever hold us or the power that we stirred.
Killing daughters, mothers, sisters,
Moving on to husbands, brothers, sons
With flame you sought to cauterize your guilt
To destroy us, every living one.
(Refrain)
Ah, hear my flame!
Ah, year my flame.
Driving us away from our homes
To seek kinder ground in newer worlds.
Grinding us beneath your godly heels
With each obstruction that we hurled.
Generations gone from touch
In a drifting haze of sparks and pain.
You never knew that they returned
In every fall of rain.
Kill me every time you find me,
I'll return over and again.
You cannot halt the thing I am
With the strength of mortal men.
(Refrain)
I am Goddess, I am God
I am the raw creation fire.
My phoenix moments come at your expense
On every muderous pyre.
I rise and return with greater strength
For the lessons that I've learned.
It was only my imperfections that you ever burned.
Burn me once again for fear,
Let your ignorance tell its tale.
But when I'm gone and darkness falls,
Let no one hear you wail.
(Refrain)
For every choice you make there is a consequence to bear.
For every movement, a pendulum swings the other way.
For every life that is taken, another springs forth stronger.
Remember this as you seek to destroy us.
Remember the healing you sought from us.
Remember the help you cried out for.
Remember all these when you strike the flame once more.
When we are gone, who will be the next to burn?
